Whether you prefer a strenuous climb or a gentle stroll, fall in Steamboat Springs makes for perfect trails and scenery. A great place to start is at Howelsen Hill: this famous ski jump spot is known for producing the most Olympians of any ski spot in North America. But Howelsen Hill isn’t only great for skiing; in the off-season, it’s a hub of the Steamboat Springs trail system, and a perfect spot to start any hike. One added bonus is the alpine slide: just ride the lift up and slide down the huge hill! Great for the whole family.

Another great spot to explore is the Routt National Forest, which offers over one million acres of wilderness to enjoy. This is an incredible spot for viewing fall leaves, even if you only want to view them from the comfort of your car. Intrepid adventurers won’t want to miss hiking to Summit Lake and Hahn’s Peak.

If you prefer gentle strolls instead, there are numerous wonderful Steamboat Springs fall season trails conveniently located right in the center of town. Enjoy a walk along the Yampa River Core Trail or explore the many species of trees planted at the Yampa River Botanic Garden. For a bit more adrenaline, but still a moderate walk, head to Fish Creek Falls, a nice walk for the whole family.

If you love mountain biking, then Steamboat Springs is a dream destination. Bikes can be ridden on most of the mountain trails around Steamboat, as well as on the Core Trail along the Yampa River. One fun option for beginners is to rent electric bikes, or even take a tour with knowledgeable guides. There are many bike rental places to choose from in Steamboat Springs, and you can take your pick of gentle cruisers, aggressive mountain bikes, and electric bikes. And hey, even if the snow has already started falling for the season, you can still ride a fat tire bike! Fall in Steamboat Springs is a truly great season for exploring the outdoors.
